Jason enters his
14th and, he says, final season with the Adanacs, hoping to repeat the
decisive role he played in the Adanacs’ Mann Cup championship in
2001. He and his family lived in Calgary the following two years, but
he returned to the Adanacs when he was hired as a municipal employee by
the City of Vancouver in 2004.
Jason was born in Calgary and first played minor lacrosse at the age of
six. He played Junior “A” in BC for Richmond from 1989 through
1991, appearing in two Minto Cup series and earning league All-Star team
selection twice.
Drafted by the Adanacs in 1992, Jason was the WLA Rookie of the Year.
His laser-like shot, pinpoint passing and mesmerizing multiple fakes make
him a fan favourite and a scourge of goaltenders in the NLL and the WLA.
His ironic sense of humour, a fusion of the sublime Stephen Wright and
the mundane Trailer Park Boys, comes out at the most inappropriate times.
Jason was a WLA First All-Star in 1997 with 100 points in 26 games. In
2005 Jason led the WLA in regular season scoring with 40 goals and 48
assists for 88 points in 18 games and was a First Team All-Star selection
as well as Adanac MVP. He missed most of that year’s playoffs due
to injury which probably cost the A’s a Mann Cup berth. Last year
he was 2nd in WLA scoring and, rather oddly, named to the Second All Star
Team. Jason again led the Adanacs in scoring in the 2007 regular season.
His career WLA stats through game two of the WLA finals include 374 goals
and 585 assists for a whopping 959 points with 520 PiM in 329 games. This
summer he became the Adanacs’ all time leading scorer, eclipsing
the previous standard of 910 points set by the great Hall of Fame member
Jim Aitchison.
Jason says, “I’m proud to be the youngest Adanac right-handed
shooter; Peter Veltman doesn’t count because he looks like he is
over 40.”
Jason played pro lacrosse for New York from 1994 through 2001 and through
2006 for the Calgary Roughnecks, helping lead them to the NLL championship
in 2004. He played last year in Edmonton. His career NLL stats to date
include 206 goals and 308 assists for 514 points and 649 loose balls retrieved
in 171 games.
Jason aspires to work for the City of Vancouver until he retires and then
“buy a van and drive around and solve mysteries”. He and his
wife Tracey were married on November 26, 1999. They own a home in Chilliwack
(long commute!) and are doting parents to their daughter Samantha, age
4 ½ and son Tyler who is 2 ½. They also are companions to
a golden retriever named Bailee and a Bernese Mountain Dog named “Boo”.
He says that crossword puzzles, mowing the lawn, taking out the garbage
and cleaning up dog droppings have replaced his old favourites of reading,
movies, golf and skiing. He adds, “My taste in movies has changed
from adult comedies and action films to Disney classics and whatever is
showing on Treehouse. My favourite music is whatever is in the shuffle
of the iPod from 50’s jazz to 90’s metal, excluding Tracey’s
70’s music she loaded on my iPod.” His favourite travel destination
is Spuzzum, BC and anywhere tropical. His cooking specialties are macaroni
& cheese, hot dogs and tomato soup.
He closes by saying, “I’m looking forward to the day when
I can sit in the stands and watch my kids play lacrosse, hockey and tennis.
Thanks to everyone in the Adanacs organization for their love and support
over 15 years, especially the good Dr. Donald Hedges and Les Wingrove
who’ve been with me from the beginning – they’ve been
my adopted fathers.”
