June 21, 2007 --
If
there was ever a time the Coquitlam Adanacs needed Colin Doyle,
or Andy Secore, or Gary Bining, it was in overtime Saturday.
The
A’s couldn’t manage a goal in the 10-minute extra
session and were shaved 11-10 by the Nanaimo Timbermen in
a Western Lacrosse Association contest at Coquitlam Sports
Centre.
The
fourth-place A’s slipped to 3-3-1 while the surprising
Timbermen improved to 5-3-0 and in a second-place tie with
the Burnaby Lakers.
New
Westminster Salmonbellies lead the seven-team pack at 7-0.
The
roster-depleted A’s were without several key players
apart from the aforementioned trio, including Steve McKinlay,
Tim Campeau, Jesse Phillips, Geoff Snider and Devan Wray,
due to injuries or other commitments.
“I
don’t want to blame out line-up on it [the loss] but
we were missing 10 bloody guys,” said A’s general
manager Les Wingrove. “We’re playing musical bodies.
But we can’t make excuses. We just have to suck it up.”
The
A’s fell behind 7-4 in the second period and 10-7 in
the third before rifling in the game’s next three goals,
including the tying marker by Taylor Wray with 1:48 remaining.
But
former PoCo Saint Casey Guerin scored what proved the winner
for the T-men at 4:16 of overtime, and the A’s couldn’t
respond.
“Considering
the line-up we had, it wasn’t that bad of an effort,”
said Wingrove, commending particularly rookie goalie Brandon
Atherton on hi s 40-save effort.
Wingrove
said he doesn’t expect a much stronger roster when the
A’s host the 3-6-0 Maple Ridge Burrards on Saturday,
7:45 p.m., Sports Centre.
“It’s
not like we’re 10 miles behind [in the standings] but
we have to start gathering points sooner or later.”
