Two big names in Tri-Cities sports are going to take up permanent residence in the community after it was announced Thursday that two new sports fields will bear their personal tags.

A hot sniper and a rock-solid outing by netminder Chris Levis helped lift the Coquitlam Adanacs to a 7-6 victory over the Langley Thunder on Wednesday, giving the senior 'A' club its first win of the season.

Lightning finally struck the Coquitlam Adanacs on Wednesday, although they had to fend off some threatening Thunder first.

The Adanacs posted their first win in three attempts this Western Lacrosse Association season via a 7-6 nail-biter over the host Langley Thunder

In Western Lacrosse Association (WLA) action, Victoria looks to be back to its old form after an off year in 2007. The Victoria Shamrocks (4-0) and the New Westminster Salmonbellies (3-0) have both been perfect out of the gate.

The Coquitlam Adanacs lost one of its founding fathers earlier this month with the passing of Lorne Reelie.

The longtime Coquitlam resident was part of the group -- led by Ralph Douglas -- who stepped forward with their time and money in 1965 to bring the senior 'A' lacrosse team to the suburbs.

At last, the Coquitlam Adanacs put together a complete game Saturday. Unfortunately for them, it occurred only in the final 20 minutes of their Western Lacrosse Association contest against the Burnaby Lakers.

Among that group was Leif Paulson, whose lacrosse roots in Prince George gave him the chance to witness history in the making as the Big Red booked their spot in the NCAA title game for the first time since 1988. "I don't think it's really set in yet that we're playing for a championship," said the 21-year-old Paulson. "It's going to be great, I can't wait. "We've come together at the right time and it's such a powerful thing when you get everybody playing together so well. That will beat a lot of skill any day." Fifth-ranked Cornell pulled off a major upset Saturday afternoon with a one-sided 15-6 win over the top-ranked University of Virginia Cavaliers. The Big Red will face their central New York state rivals, the Syracuse Orange, who beat the Duke Blue Devils 17-7 in the first semifinal Saturday. Paulson, a third-year midfielder and D.P. Todd secondary school graduate, didn't get to play in the semifinal, but was there for support on the sidelines, ready to play if any of the Big Red attack players went down with an injury. But that didn't happen, and the Big Red starters Rob Parnell, Ryan Hurley and Chris Finn supplied all the offence they needed, scoring three goals each to defeat Virginia in front of crowd of 36,574. Monday's game will be broadcast live on ESPN2.

In the off-season, the Calgary Roughnecks are dispersed from the West to East Coast playing in their summer leagues. The Western Lacrosse Association (WLA) is out West while the Major Series Lacrosse League (MSL) is located  in Eastern Canada.

It took a long, long time for the Coquitlam Adanacs to secure the playing rights to Daryl Veltman.

For A’s general manager Les Wingrove, the wait was well worth it.

As a team in transition, the Coquitlam Adanacs teasingly exceeded expectations a year ago to the point where they enter the 2009 Western Lacrosse Association regular season with a similar strategy.

As a kid growing up in the 1940s, Sohen Gill would hang around Burnaby's Confederation Park.  One day a man, who turned out to be Val Roach, asked him, “Hey kid, do you want to play lacrosse?” “Sure,” the tyke replied. “Well, then show up on Saturday and we’ll have a stick for you.”

The team launches the new season tomorrow, 7:45 p.m. at Queen's Park against the reigning league champions. Coquitlam then hosts Burnaby on Saturday, 7:45 p.m. at the Sports Centre.

Despite managing only eight tallies in their two exhibition games, the Coquitlam Adanacs should have no problem scoring goals this Western Lacrosse Association.

Preventing them –– at least initially –– may be a bigger task.

CALGARY–Josh Sanderson, Dane Dobbie, and Bruce Codd each scored twice last night as the Calgary Roughnecks won their second National Lacrosse League championship, winning 12-10 over the New York Titans.
