The Adanacs selected
Gary in the first round of the WLA draft four years ago.
Collegiate commitments in pre-med at The Ohio State University have annually
kept him out of the line-up until June but he’s now completed his
undergraduate studies.
Gary first played minor lacrosse in Delta. He played one year of intermediate
lacrosse in New Westminster, helping his team win the provincials and
one year in Delta before his junior career in Burnaby. His Junior “A”
stats for Burnaby include 100 goals and 182 assists for 282 points plus
36 PiM in 80 league and play-off games. In 2002, Gary was his team’s
Most Inspirational Player and Top Scorer, won the team’s Coach’s
Award and earned league First Team All-Star and Most Sportsmanlike Player
honours. He was again named the league Most Sportsmanlike Player and was
a second-team All Star in 2003. Gary played in three Minto Cup series
with the Junior Lakers, winning one championship ring.
He had a fine rookie season with the Adanacs but was only able to play
six regular season games lastseason as he was recovering from an injury.
His WLA stats through last weekend (including 8 games this year) include
26 goals and 42 assists plus 13 PiM in 39 games.
He recently graduated from Ohio State where he attended on a field lacrosse
scholarship and helped the Buckeyes win consecutive conference championships
in his first two years. He was named Captain as a senior along with Adanac
teammate Jason Bloom. Gary majored in Biology and was a four-time OSU
scholar-athlete as well as being named to the National Dean’s List.
Although he has his eye on the NLL his main focus other than the Adanacs
is applying to medical schools. Gary is single and open to changing his
status under the right circumstances.
Sports interests other than lacrosse include tennis, bocce, and beach
volleyball. Gary plays acoustic guitar and is attempting to teach teammate
Andrew McBride; however, numerous hours have produced little progress.
He said, “My cooking skills have drastically improved and I’m
slowly mastering Indian cuisine.” Gary is a fan of Coldplay and
enjoys all types of music with John Mayer and Nick Williams, his former
college roommate, being his favourites. His favourite film is Scent of
a Woman. On the OSU website Gary listed Adanac teammate and Calgary Roughneck
stalwart Andrew McBride as his favourite professional athlete.
The people most influential in his lacrosse career include Rod Salas,
Dr. Dave Lough, Paul Dalmonte, Joe Breschi of Ohio State and perennial
WLA All-Star Kyle Goundrey.
