Given
his wealth of lacrosse experience it’s kind of odd that this is
Devan’s rookie year in the WLA.
Born Edmonton, Alberta, Devan first played lacrosse at age 12 for the
Edmonton Dragons and then for two years of Junior “B” lacrosse
for the Edmonton Miners before being recruited by the powerhouse Burnaby
Junior Lakers. He helped anchor the defense and contributed his great
face-off skills as the Lakers beat Six Nations to win the Minto Cup in
1998 and Orangeville in 2000.
Work commitments kept him from playing in the WLA until this year but
he did help lead the Edmonton Outlaws to the President’s Cup Senior
B Championship in 2002.
In ten regular season games this year as an Adanac, he scored 2 goals
and 1 assist with 8 PiM and was a wizard on face-offs).
Devan is a truly outstanding midfielder in field lacrosse and was a member
of Canada’s Junior Lacrosse Team that took the bronze medal in Japan
in 1996 and the silver medal in 1999 in Australia. In those 1999 world
junior championships Devan was team captain and named all-world midfielder.
Devan studied sociology with a business minor at Duke University on a
lacrosse scholarship and helped the Blue Demons win the ACC championship
in 2001 and 2002. He was team co-captain in 2003.
He played in the NLL for Calgary for the past four years with his brother
and several other Adanac teammates and was a key player on transition
when the Roughnecks won the Champions Cup in 2004. His NLL stats to date
include 11 goals and 27 assists for 38 points plus 281 loose balls retrieved
and only 45 PiM in 56 games and, most dramatically, 548 face-off wins
in 936 attempts for a stellar 58.5 percent.
Devan completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in 2003 and now works in Calgary
as Sales Manager for the Prairie Region (Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba)
for Advantage Sport Inc. (www.advantagesport.com). His other interests
include golf, snowboarding, skiing and mountain biking. We think he’ll
add ocean fishing, surfing, bird watching, ecotourism and mile-high zip
lines to that list after his honeymoon this winter in Costa Rica with
his brother and other Adanac teammates and friends.
Devan met his fiancée Charlee way back in high school in Edmonton
which will be encouraging to those who believe in abiding love. They will
be married in Banff, Alberta on August 18th. After that no Adanac player
is allowed to get married in the summer ever again. Devan and Charlee
live in Calgary with their 10 month old dog “Koda”, a shepherd/retriever
cross.
Devan says that the people most influential in his lacrosse career were
his brother, his parents and his coaches Paul Dalmonte in Burnaby and
Mike Pressler and Joe Alberici at Duke.
