The Adanacs started
recruiting Peter Veltman after his first year of Junior “A”
lacrosse with the encouragement of his uncle, the popular former Adanac,
Jim Veltman.
Peter first played lacrosse at age four in his native Brampton Ontario,
bantam lacrosse in Georgetown (which is a suburb of Orangeville, if you
can believe that, and home to teammate Brad MacDonald) and Junior “B”
in Georgetown at age 15. He was drafted #1 by Orangeville, where he played
for five years, including in two Minto Cup appearances. A relentless two-way
player, Peter scored 148 goals and 170 assists for 318 points and 187
PIM in 118 Junior “A” games.
Selected by Ottawa #6 overall in the NLL draft in 2002, Peter’s
season was ended by knee surgery. In Arizona he first played a defensive
role but since has shown off his considerable offensive ability, scoring
27 goals and 32 assists in 44 games, picking up 164 loose balls and only
39 PIM in 2005 and, playing last year with Adanac teammates Andy Secore,
Curt Malawsky and Brad MacDonald and new Adanac, Brandon Atherton, scoring
4 goals and 10 assists plus 17 loose balls retrieved in 9 games. He played
in the 2005 NLL final against the Toronto Rock (and Uncle Jim)
before many conflicted family members and in the final against Rochester.
In his rookie season in Coquitlam he scored 24 goals and 27 assists for
51 points and 13 PIM in 26 games, earning the team’s Unsung Hero
award. The next year he scored 30 goals and 27 assists for 57 points plus
34 PIM in 27 games. Last year, though hampered by injuries, he scored
30 goals and 31 assists for 61 points and 31 PIM in 18 regular season
and playoff games. He can’t wait to play this year with Colin Doyle,
Curt Malawsky and Dan Stroup …. Adanac stars who have returned for
this year’s drive to the Mann Cup.
Peter has taken up permanent residence in Coquitlam and is living with
his girlfriend, Katie Toutgas. He enjoys playing golf and cards, including
the king of card games, Euchre. His favourite movie is Slapshot. Peter
was a finicky eater (really finicky: spaghetti, only with his mother’s
sauce, and steaks) but after a trip to the Oregon Coast with several
teammates and to Costa Rica with teammate Andrew Biers and others he has
been seen eating Thai and Mexican food as well as seafood.
An obsessive golfer in Arizona during the NLL season, in the summers Peter
works on the golf course for the City of Burnaby. He has a winning personality
and is one of the most naturally happy people you’ll ever meet.
The people most influential in his lacrosse career have been Orangeville
coach Lindsay Sanderson and Peter’s family, especially his folks
and Uncle Jim.
