Daryl’s
roots in BC go back a long way.
His uncle Jim first played for the Adanacs in 1988 as a graduating junior
and was WLA Rookie of the Year, season MVP, Playoff MVP and Game 3-Star
Award winner plus a WLA First All-Star selection. Jim played three seasons
for the Adanacs.
Another uncle, Dave, lived here for several years, and Daryl’s older
brother Peter moved here permanently in 2005.
Daryl finished his commitment as team captain for the Orangeville Northmen
last August and then moved permanently to BC for career and family reasons.
He played field lacrosse at Hobart College in New York and came home to
BC in May. But, a dispute about his interprovincial release kept him off
the floor until this was resolved on June 29th by the Sports Dispute Resolution
Centre of Canada.
Given his performance in his first two games (3 goals and 5 assists) there’s
no telling how close he could have come to matching his uncle Jim’s
rookie performance had he been able to practice and play with the Adanacs
since May. The sound of “Veltman from Veltman” is sweet music
to Adanac fans, especially since Peter and Daryl are among the most decent
and likeable guys you’ll ever meet.
Daryl’s junior career was interrupted by injuries but his statistics
are still impressive including 137 goals and 240 assists for 377 points
plus 102 PiM in 106 league and playoff games. He was 4th in league scoring
in 2002, 3rd in 2004, first in 2005 and first in playoff scoring last
year.
Daryl played high school lacrosse at Salisbury School and led his team
to a 14-1 record in 2004. He played for the Canadian U-19 National Team
that finished second at the 2003 World Championships. His career at Hobart,
where he studies economics, has been highlighted by numerous three and
four goal games and the honour of being the first rookie to lead the team
in scoring since 1971. His stats to date from Hobart include 50 goals
and 31 assists for 126 points on 40% shooting with three game winning
goals.
Daryl’s other interests are hockey, fishing, camping, and sleeping.
He can cook grilled cheese; that’s it. He is a movie fan with favourites
including Dumb and Dumber and Slapshot but he also likes the more highbrow
Breaking and Entering. His favorite novel is Tuesdays With Morrie and
his favourite music is by The Tragically Hip. Daryl met his girlfriend
Molly Chudleigh at college; she is in Environmental Studies. She hails
from Austin, Texas which she says is not Bush country (hooray). Daryl
is working for the City of Coquitlam as a sports camp instructor.
He says that the most important people in his lacrosse career have been
his parents, Gerald and Linda.
