Steve McKinlay Steve McKinlay

Steve was the Adanacs’ first pick in the WLA draft in 2007. Though he fit easily in the line-up as a call-up from the Coquitlam Junior “A” squad. his credentials actually go back much further as he was a ball boy for the Senior squad since he could hold a stick and started running the 30 second clock when he was a Bantam player.

He says, “After the game my parents would be in the lounge and I would go on the floor and practice all the stuff I saw in the game until my dad came and got me or the janitor kicked me out.” Upon being selected by the Adanacs, Steve’s response: “Being picked by the A’s is an honour. It is rare that a young kid gets to be part of a team with so much leadership and talent and its great to be part of a team with my father.” Sandy has been an Adanac director for the past 10 years.

Steve played all of his lacrosse in Coquitlam and was team captain for the Junior A’s in his final season. His Junior “A” stats included 48 goals and 56 assists for 104 points plus 47 PIM in 42 games. He has been hobbled by injuries and only able to play four games this summer. His intensity on the floor has been sorely missed. Steve says “My greatest regret, this year, is not being able to play with Adanac stars Pat Coyle, Curt Malawsky, and Jason Wulder.” Steve’s WLA stats through the 2009 regular season include 27 goals and 26 assists for 53 points plus 31 PIM in 43 games. He played defense and transition in San Jose in the NLL last season and scored a goal and 2 assists with 10 PIM in six games while winning 58% of his face-offs.

Steve played field lacrosse on a scholarship at Ohio State where he studied biology and was a four-time Scholar Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten three times. Before college he was named BC Player of the Year as team captain of Coquitlam Midget A-1. He won an Intermediate “A” provincial championship with Coquitlam in 2003 and was recently the assistant coach of the 2009 Intermediate Adanacs who won provincials this summer, the first time since Steve won in 2003. He was the leading scorer and All-Star in 2003 at the Canadian U-19 national championships playing for the BC Selects. For college prep, he attended the Western Reserve Academy in Ohio where started for three years, was team captain and twice named to the Ohio All-Star team.

Steve’s other sports interests include golf and hockey. Steve’s favourite movies are “whatever is on at Doc’s.” His favourite band is The Gaslight Anthem and is turning everyone he meets into fans of them. He is currently reading “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini. As for cooking specialties he says, “Unlike Trent Smalley, I am a BBQ master. When at Secore’s I cook and he cleans.” He enjoyed traveling with Doc and fellow Adanac teammates down the Oregon Coast last summer. He enjoyed traveling in Costa Rica with several Adanac teammates two years ago, especially the howler monkeys, crocodiles, surfing and fishing, “grueling birding tours with Doc” and ocean fishing. He could do without the snakes and spiders. The rest of the crew enjoyed his 24/7 imitation of the Crocodile Hunter. The people most important in Steve’s lacrosse career include his dad, his mom Wendy and the phenomenal Curt Malawsky.
