Ray joined the Adanacs in 2007 in a trade with Langley and fit in very well with the rest of a very intimidating defensive corps. Ray adds his unique style and a certain, um, edge that appeals to his teammates and infuriates his opponents and is well known for his relentless checking.
He first played lacrosse in Delta at age 3 and played minor lacrosse in Delta and then in Surrey where he also played 2 years in Intermediate “A”. A defensive and transition specialist with good stick skills, Ray played four Junior “A” seasons in Surrey, scoring 49 goals and 51 assists for 100 points and 367 PiM in 74 games.
Ray was taken 8th overall by Burnaby in the WLA draft and played a year and a half for the Lakers, one season for the Okanagan Thunder, two for North Shore and one in Langley, sitting out 1999, 2001 and 2005. His WLA stats through this regular season include 21 goals and 46 assists for 67 points plus 435 PiM (his enthusiasm and tenacity are tragically misunderstood) in 148 games. In six seasons in the NLL in Buffalo, Minnesota and Portland he’s scored 5 goals and 10 assists for 15 points plus 182 loose balls retrieved and 207 PiM in 62 games.
Ray played Junior hockey (left wing) for 4 years in Swift Current, SK and Nanaimo, BC followed by 5 years of collegiate hockey at Lethbridge where he completed a BA in Sociology followed by a year of pro hockey at Rockford, IL. He says, “I prefer lacrosse because of the social rewards. I’ve never met a bad guy in lacrosse.”
Ray works in construction with his father while preparing for a teaching career. He likes playing cards including Texas Hold ‘em and Euchre and enjoys camping, movies (Shawshank Redemption is his favourite), reading novels and listening to music, especially Arron Boh. He does not dance, period. Ray is dating Tara Rendall, a beautiful and sophisticated investment advisor. He enjoys cooking pasta with his own homemade sauces.
The people most influential in his lacrosse career include his Junior “A” coach Doug Clarke and one of the best all-around lacrosse players in history, former Adanac player and now head coach, Andy Ogilvie.
