Pat Coyle Pat Coyle

The Adanacs are very glad to welcome back Pat Coyle, who missed the first few games this season while recovering from surgery. Pat has been the anchor for the Adanacs defense for a dozen years and elevates the level of play of the whole team while stifling the offensive aspirations of the very best opponents.

Pat played minor lacrosse from the age of 7 in Orangeville, that hotbed of lacrosse from which the Adanacs continue to draw strength (current teammates Veltman, Quinlan, MacDonald and McDonald played in Orangeville as did past Adanacs Kruger, Sanderson, Sanderson, Howard, Merrill and Merrill). Promoted early to Junior “A” lacrosse, Pat played three years for Brampton and three for Orangeville and was named Defensive Player of the Year (let’s call it “DPOY”, as it’s a recurrent theme).

In Senior “A” play for Brampton (1991 – 1993) Pat was team DPOY three times, League DPOY in 1993, team MVP in 1991 and Assistant Captain in Brampton’s Mann Cup championship years of 1992 and 1993, the latter versus Coquitlam.

The A’s recruited Pat and his brother Mike after that and both played for the A’s in 1994. Pat was named team DPOY annually and honoured as the first W. L. A. DPOY award recipient in 1996, an award he also won in 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2002. He was named to the W. L. A. First All-Star Team in 1997 and 2002 and the Second All-Star Team from 1998 through 2001. His Senior “A” stats through last season included 107 goals and 430 assists for 537 points and 979 PiM in 372 games.

In 2002 Pat was the first defensive player ever to earn "All Pro" honours in the NLL. Pat’s transition game has produced many breakaway goals thanks to his well-placed dying swan lob shot. He was a key to the Toronto Rock’s NLL championships in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003. Pat led the defense for Team Canada in the field lacrosse world championships in Perth, Australia in 2002 and for gold-medal winning Team Canada at the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships in 2004.

Pat is an obsessive and generally astute fan of film and literature and has an annoyingly accurate memory both for substance and triviata. Based on his numerous TV appearances and his anchor role in the production of the NLL promotional DVD War on the Floor, he could become a superb TV sports commentator. A fierce competitor, Pat is a gentleman off the floor and is a truly exemplary father for his daughter Ciara and son Dakota, who continue to thrive in school, sports and the arts. Like every hero, Pat has an Achilles heel: every pizza delivery service within twenty kilometers knows where he lives. He whiles away his spare time playing Internet solitaire or video games if he is not working for his best friend, Jason Bishop, at Great-West Fire in fire suppression system installations, or spending time with his many friends, especially his girlfriend Jennifer and her children Stephanie and Jessica.

The person most influential in his lacrosse career was his coach for the Toronto Rock, Les Bartley.
