Mike
came to Coquitlam in 2006 as another astute Adanac draft pick. As a defensive
specialist, he has earned his regular role on a talent-laden Adanacs defensive
corps.
He first played lacrosse at age 10 and played all of his minor lacrosse
in Surrey. He enjoyed the chance to play Midget lacrosse at the BC Summer
Games, winning a gold medal. He was a solid contributor on four Provincial
championship teams and was tournament MVP in one Bantam lacrosse championship
year.
His Surrey Junior “A” squad topped the regular season league
standings in his final year. Mike is a strong, mobile defenseman who checks
hard but clean. His Junior “A” stats included 8 goals and
17 assists for 25 points plus only 47 PiM in 72 games.
He potted one goal and added six assists plus only 2 PiM in 14 regular
season games last season. His WLA stats through last year’s Mann
Cup included 2 goals and 9 assists plus only 14 PiM in 46 games.
Mike is personable and is well-liked by his teammates because of his work
ethic, his commitment to teamwork and his effective and reliable defense.
He says that he likes lacrosse because “It’s fun, entertaining,
good exercise, and you meet a lot of people. I like the physical, skills
and team aspects. Lacrosse is like a battle that you don’t want
to loose. There’s another army of men trying to get into your territory
and take something important from you and it’s my job to stop them.”
Mike has also played centre back in soccer, football and any other sport
he can fit in to his busy schedule. He enjoys working out, camping and
lake fishing. He doesn’t cook often but he says that he is a magician
on the BBQ with steaks being his specialty. After high school he studied
in college and now works as a short-haul truck driver. He plans to go
back to school at BCIT. He’s single but that shouldn’t last
long. Mike’s favourite movies are Scarface and Casino while his
favourite actors are Denzel Washington and Al Pacino. He likes to listen
to hip hop and to rhythm and blues.
The people most influential in his lacrosse career have been his parents,
Jim and Margaret, all of his coaches and WLA standouts Rory McDade, Kris
Bride, Ray Guze and the superlative defenseman, former Adanac captain
Pat Coyle.
