Gary Bining Gary Bining

Jason is in his 16th season with the Adanacs, hoping to repeat the decisive role he played in the Adanacs’ Mann Cup championship in 2001. In 2002 and 2003 he and his family lived in Calgary but he returned to the Adanacs when he was hired as a municipal employee by the City of Vancouver in 2004.

Jason was born in Calgary and first played minor lacrosse at the age of six. He played Junior “A” in B. C. for Richmond from 1989 through 1991, appearing in two Minto Cup series and earning league All-Star team selection twice.

Drafted by the Adanacs in 1992, Jason was the WLA Rookie of the Year. His laser-like shot, pinpoint passing and mesmerizing multiple fakes make him a fan favourite and a scourge of goaltenders in the NLL and the WLA. Jason was a WLA First All-Star in 1997 with 100 points in 26 games. In 2005 Jason led the WLA in regular season scoring with 40 goals and 48 assists for 88 points in 18 games and was a First Team All-Star selection as well as Adanac MVP. Tragically he missed most of the playoffs due to injury which probably cost the A’s a Mann Cup berth. In 2006 he was 2nd in WLA scoring and, rather oddly, named to the Second All Star Team. Jason’s career WLA stats through this regular season include 448 goals and 661 assists for a whopping 1109 points with 597 PiM in 377 games. Every point extends his lead as top scorer in Adanac history.

Jason played pro lacrosse for New York from 1994 through 2001 and through 2006 for the Calgary Roughnecks, helping lead them to the NLL championship in 2004. He played last year in Edmonton. His career NLL stats to date include 236 goals and 349 assists for 585 points and 723loose balls retrieved in 195 games.

His ironic sense of humour is a fusion of the sublime Stephen Wright and the mundane Trailer Park Boys and comes out at the most inappropriate times. Jason aspires to work for the City until he retires and then “become Les and Joanne Wingrove’s pool boy”. He and Tracey were married on November 26, 1999. They own a home in Chilliwack (long commute!) and are doting parents to Samantha, Tyler and Jamie and are companions to a golden retriever named Bailee and a Bernese Mountain Dog named “Boo”. Tracey is a Controller for a company in Chilliwack. Jason says that crossword puzzles, mowing the lawn, taking out the garbage and cleaning up dog droppings have replaced his old favourites of reading, movies, golf and skiing. He adds, “My taste in movies has changed from adult comedies and action films to Disney classics and whatever is showing on Treehouse. My favourite music is whatever is in the shuffle of the iPod from 50’s jazz to 90’s metal, excluding Tracey’s 70’s music she loaded on my iPod.” The family’s favourite travel destination is Floras Lake House in Langlois, Oregon. His cooking specialties are macaroni & cheese, hot dogs and tomato soup.

Adanacs fans will recall that Jason’s retirement after last season was acknowledged (with regret) at our annual Awards Banquet at the Westwood Plateau Golf Club. We might repeat that ceremony if he plays a couple more years but if he retires this fall we’ll get all glum together at Timmy’s. Jason says, “I’m proud to have played with half of the Reelie family.”
