The
Adanacs tried to bring Craig on board via the trade route over the past
several years.
He signed with Coquitlam as a free agent during post-game socializing
in the Calgary Saddledome after an NLL game which also served as a recruiting
opportunity. Coaches, management, teammates, fans and staff were all excited
at the news and he’s already proven his worth to the team with his
tremendous defensive ability, experience, power and leadership.
Craig first played lacrosse at age 7 and completed minor and intermediate
lacrosse in Mackenzie, BC. He played one year of Junior “A”
in Richmond and two years for New Westminster, playing in the Minto Cup
both years including the 1994 championship season. His Junior “A”
statistics (excluding playoffs in 1993 and 1994 for which stats were not
available) included 28 goals and 25 assists for 53 points and 180 PIM
in 77 games.
Drafted by Maple Ridge in 1996, Craig won the Ed Bayley Award as WLA Rookie
of the Year. In 1999 he won the Gord Nicholson Award as WLA Top Defensive
Player (popularly known with few exceptions for many years as the Pat
Coyle Award). He played from 2001 through 2003 for New Westminster before
sitting out for personal reasons for two years, though he played the past
three seasons for Calgary in the NLL. His WLA statistics prior to this
season included 36 goals and 64 assists for 100 points and 165 PIM in
122 games.
Known as a very hard-hitting defenseman, it’s noteworthy that he
seldom takes penalties as he plays very effectively within the rules.
This applies to the NLL as well where his stats as a Roughneck include
8 assists and 32 PIM plus 137 loose balls won in 30 games. He was a solid
defensive contributor to the Calgary NLL championship season in 2004 and
now looks forward to adding at least one Mann Cup ring to complete his
collection.
Craig is a firefighter for the City of Vancouver. He married his wife
Laura in 2002 at the Swaneset Country Club. Laura is a special education
assistant. Craig is devoted to his family life with Laura and their 2-year-old
son Jack. He likes movies including his favourite film, “Pulp Fiction”.
He prefers rock music.
The people most influential in his lacrosse career include coaches Paul
Raines and Stan Stewardson.
