Gary Bining Gary Bining

The Adanacs selected Gary in the first round of the WLA draft in 2003 but commitments in pre-med at The Ohio State University kept him out of the line-up until 2005. Gary first played minor lacrosse in Delta followed by one year of intermediate lacrosse in New Westminster. His Junior “A” stats for Burnaby were 100 goals and 182 assists for 282 points plus 36 PIM in 80 league and play-off games. In 2002, Gary was his team’s Most Inspirational Player and Top Scorer, won the team’s Coach’s Award and earned league First Team All-Star and Most Sportsmanlike Player honours. He was again the league Most Sportsmanlike Player and was a second-team All Star in 2003.

Gary played in three Minto Cup series with the Junior Lakers, winning one championship ring. He had a fine rookie season with the Adanacs, but was only able to play six regular season games this season as he was recovering from an injury. His WLA stats through the 2009 regular season include 75 goals and 137 assists for 212 points plus only 31 PIM in 110 games.

Gary completed his degree in Biology at Ohio State on a field lacrosse scholarship and helped the Buckeyes win consecutive conference championships in his first two years. He was named Captain as a senior. Gary was a four-time OSU scholar-athlete and was named to the National Dean’s List. He had a fine rookie season in the NLL, scoring 21 goals and 25 assists for 46 points and 57 loose balls retrieved while playing in Boston with Adanac teammate Daryl Veltman.

Gary is “single but interested”. His sports other than lacrosse include tennis, bocce, and beach volleyball. He plays acoustic guitar and has devoted many apparently futile hours trying to teach Adanac teammate Andrew McBride how to play. Fortunately, perseverance is one of Gary’s strong suits? Gary says, “My cooking skills have drastically improved and I’m slowly mastering Indian cuisine.” He is a fan of Coldplay, but also enjoys all types of music with John Mayer and Nick Williams, his former college roommate, being his favourites. His favourite film is Scent of a Woman. On the OSU website Gary listed the Calgary Roughneck’s Andrew McBride as his favourite professional athlete. The people most influential in his lacrosse career include Rod Salas, Dr. David Lough, Paul Dalmonte, Joe Breschi of Ohio State and perennial WLA All-Star Kyle Goundrey.
