When Curt Malawsky, veteran Adanac player and former Burnaby Lakers Junior “A” coach, told us that we had to take Dane Dobbie in the first round of the 2008 WLA draft because, as he put it, “He’s the next Josh Sanderson”, we thought, sure, he’s a great prospect and a no-brainer as a first-round pick, but expecting him to match “Shooter” Sanderson was a pretty tall order (no allusion to their stature intended). The Adanacs were very surprised to be able to select Dane in the first round and, as it turned out, his rookie season actually surpassed Shooter’s.
Dane led the WLA in regular season scoring, and in 18 league games and 11 playoff games he scored a stunning 44 goals and 57 assists for 101 points and only 34 PIM (mostly for asking the refs if mugging is legal). His dazzling stick skills, quick moves to get open, grit and resilience made him the WLA co-Rookie of the Year and also earned him WLA Leading Scorer, MVP and First All Star Team honours as well as the WLA Three-Star Award. In other words, he did it all.
Born in Fergus, Ontario, Dane first played lacrosse for Elora at age 4 and played 2 years of Junior “B” at Elora before joining Burnaby for three years of Junior “A” lacrosse. He said, “I came to B. C. for one year but decided to stay because of the weather and the friendly people.”
He played in three Minto Cup series with Burnaby, winning a ring in 2005 when he was also named team MVP and playoff MVP. His Junior “A” stats include 118 goals and 129 assists for 247 points and 95 PIM in 61 games. He says that he was very glad to join the Adanacs which he described as “a great team and a great organization”.
Dane played with Adanac teammates Curt Malawsky and Andrew McBride (and new Adanac Assistant Coach Kyle Goundrey) for the NLL champion Calgary Roughnecks and sports NLL stats of 51 goals (24 on the power play) and 49 assists for 100 points plus 111 loose balls and only 24 PIM in 24 games.
His other sports include hockey (he played centre through the Junior level) and especially golf (although his handicap is about 10). He is an apprentice electrician at App Electrical Services in Burnaby. He enjoys listening to AC/DC. His favourite film is Black Sheep. He likes to cook pasta and pizza but when dining out it’s definitely steak. Dane and his girlfriend Caylin, who is a waitress at the Cactus Club, just returned from a week on the Mexican Riviera. Dane says, “The snorkeling and parasailing were incredible and the pyramids at Chichen-Itza are huge!”
Dane’s grandfather Bob Dobbie played for Fergus, Victoria and Brampton from 1951 through 1962, scoring 416 goals and 162 assists for 589 points in 237 games. Dane says that the people most influential in his lacrosse career include his father, Larry; his grandfather and former coach and current (though injured) teammate, Curt Malawsky, “who made me a better player”.
