Cory comes to the Adanacs as our first round pick in the WLA draft and, although commitments in his NLL city of Portland and then with family in Victoria kept him out of the lineup at the start of this, his rookie season, he made up for the missed games and more in his first two WLA games, scoring 4 goals and 6 assists for 10 points including the game-winning goals in both games.
A very personable fellow, Cory was born in Brentwood Bay near Victoria, B. C. and first played lacrosse at age 4. He played all of his minor lacrosse and three years of Junior “A” lacrosse in Victoria, including during last year’s Minto Cup series. His Junior “A” stats including a very impressive 102 goals and 141 assists for 243 points and only 47 PIM in 65 games.
He has played professionally for two years in the Rose City, including in the 2008 championship final, scoring 34 goals and 44 assists for 78 points in 26 games while retrieving 91 loose balls with only 17 PIM.
Cory played soccer as a kid (striker) and ice hockey in all positions except goaltending until he took up field lacrosse at age 15. He played on a lacrosse scholarship for two years at Stony Brook in New York where he studied health sciences and was an all-star in the American East Conference. He said that the move at 17 from Vancouver Island to Long Island was an even bigger cultural change than a geographical change.
Cory is a great fan of film and is enjoying the DVD library and home theatre at his summer residence. His favourite films include Gladiator, The Departed, Dumb and Dumber and The Lord of the Rings. His favourite books are the Lord of the Rings trilogy. He appreciates all kinds of music; his favourite band is The Tragically Hip. He enjoys cooking on the grill and dining out on pasta.
His father Kim is a marine biologist and geologist whose work takes him on trips far from Canada. His mother Donna works for the Canadian Health Authority.
He says that the people most influential in his lacrosse career so far have been his father and Mr. Brett Savory, who coached him in minor and field lacrosse.
