Chris was born in
Windsor, Ontario and first played lacrosse there at the age of 13. He
decided to play goal at that age and never changed his mind.
Chris played three seasons as a Junior for Six Nations and two for Sarnia
and was named team MVP in 1996. He played in the WLA for North Shore in
1998 and 1999 and for the Okanogan Thunder in 2000. In 2001 he tended
goal for Six Nations in the OLA.
He turned a lot of heads in his first year as an Adanac when Dallas Eliuk
missed the season due to surgery. Chris rose to the occasion including
in the playoffs and followed up in 2003 by earning the Leo Nicholson Trophy
as top WLA goaltender and being named to the WLA First All-Star team.
His WLA stats through 2007 include 5003 saves on 6475 shots in 174 games
for a 77.3% save average. Last year Chris established himself as the Adanacs’
starting goalie with a stellar season, especially in the playoffs in which
he made 345 saves on 404 shots (85.4 save %) in nine games including a
sweep of the New Westminster Salmonbellies in the WLA final series. For
his efforts, Chris was named winner of the Bill Ellison Trophy as the
WLA Playoff MVP award.
Chris’ stellar performance during the playoffs and Mann Cup pushed
his save percentage as an Adanac to 78.8%. That established a new record
for Best Career Save Percentage as an Adanac.
Chris played in the NLL for Buffalo, the New York Saints and Columbus
before signing with the Calgary Roughnecks in 2004, where he enjoyed the
championship run along with former Adanac teammates Tracey Kelusky and
Kevin Howard. He added a second NLL championship ring to his collection
in 2006 playing with Adanacs Pat Coyle and Dan Stroup in Colorado and
helping the Mammoth to several key victories.
Chris also enjoys snowboarding, working out, reading physiology and similar
texts, playing the guitar and taking in a good flick at the cinema or
the home theatre as well as road biking and squash in the off-season.
Chris oversees the operations of Studio 55, an elite high-performance
training facility in downtown Vancouver. His wife, Shelley runs her own
business called Earth Ink Garden Design; her efforts earned my yard an
award from the City of Coquitlam last year. As for cooking, Chris said,
“It’s all about the barbeque dinners and Sunday breakfasts!”
Chris does have excellent taste in restaurants (The Banana Leaf is a favourite).
The people most important in his lacrosse career include his father, Joe,
and the legendary Cap Bomberry.
