Andrew was born in Toronto and played lacrosse in Brampton from age five until a move to Calgary at age nine where he played through age 18. He played Junior “A” lacrosse in Victoria and was team Rookie of the Year and later team Most Inspirational Player. Andrew is a defensive and transition specialist with great stick skills. His Junior “A” stats included 43 goals and 61 assists for 104 points and 67 PIM in 55 games.
Andrew played field lacrosse at Whittier College in California and was named team MVP three times and an All-American twice. He studied Economics with a minor in Business.
In his rookie WLA season he scored 14 goals and 11 assists for 25 points and only 9 PIM in 23 games and was team Rookie of the Year. The next season he scored 20 goals and 23 assists on 53 shots with only 10 PIM in 25 games and was named team and WLA Unsung Hero and named a WLA Second Team All-Star. He scored his 100th WLA point last season and sported WLA stats of 49 goals and 53 assists for 102 points and only 31 PIM in 71 games through the end of the 2008 season.
Andrew did not play in 2007 due to injuries and surgery. He played in the NLL in San Jose last year and will be closer to home this season as that franchise has relocated to Everett, Washington. His NLL stats through this spring include 26 goals and 57 assists for 83 points with 268 loose balls and only 33 PIM in 71 games.
Biers is one of the most underrated players in lacrosse except by teammates and opponents who give him universal respect for playing relentless, effective and clean defense. He lives in Langley and is an Account Manager for equipment financing at the Canadian Western Bank in Abbotsford. He says, “Come and talk to me about your heavy equipment or transportation financing needs.”
His favourite music is by The Tragically Hip, and Face to Face. He used to go to punk rock concerts, which is a bit of a surprise because he looks, well, like a banker. Or a narc. He is an avid reader; his favourite novel is The Picture of Dorian Grey while his favourite authors are Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Wilbur Smith and John Steinbeck. His favourite film remains “Top Gun” but he regularly borrows much better DVDs from me.
Andrew’s relationship partner is the very lovely and sophisticated Robin Malcolm. She plans to use her degree in Criminology in her ultimate career.
Andrew used be quite reticent socially but appears to have morphed with his loquacious if somewhat testy alter ego, “Norm”, into one functional unit. If you are serving steaks you should hire him for his BBQ skills (for real). He enjoys dining out at Mr. Choo’s in Langley and loves Mexican food. He has mastered ocean fishing off Tofino, Mexico, and Costa Rica where he spent last Christmas holidays fishing for mahi-mahi and teaching the new Costa Rican national lacrosse team in a day of drills and scrimmages with teammates Peter Veltman, Ross Halliday, Brad Richardson and Brad MacDonald and guests from other WLA teams.
The people most influential in Andrew’s lacrosse include his parents and Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Famer, Jim Burke.
